The forest department was established in 182 during the British rule. In undivided India at that time, the following names were known:
- Imperial Forest Service
- Provincial Forest Service
- Subordinate Forest Service
Prior to the partition of India in 1947, the forests of Bangladesh, Bengal and Assam were under the control of two forest divisions. After Pakistan, the following names were given under the Ministry of Agriculture:
- East Pakistan Senior Forest Service
- Subordinate Forest Service
With the introduction of Bangladesh Civil Service Cadre Rule in 1960, Bangladesh Senior Forest Service was given B.C.S. (Forest) is cadre.
Creation of the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 1989. Earlier, the forest department was under the Ministry of Agriculture.
